The healthy-bone mineral
Calcium is the most common mineral in the body and one of the most important. Responsible for healthy bones, calcium is stored almost exclusively in your bones and teeth. It’s important to get enough calcium starting in infancy because bones grow and reach their maximum density during childhood. Even in adulthood, bones constantly shed and add material, so you should continue to consume adequate calcium to replace bone that is lost during this process.
Your body gets the calcium it needs in two ways, either through calcium-rich foods or through supplements. Dairy products have the highest concentration per serving of calcium; you also can find it in dried beans and dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collards. If it’s been a while since you ate a meal containing calcium, your body can borrow it from your bones. Unfortunately, you can’t always replace the borrowed calcium by eating more, so it’s important to keep your intake steady. The best way to get calcium is through a healthy diet, particularly foods that pair calcium with Vitamin D, the vitamin that helps you absorb calcium. Many Smart Balance® products contain calcium, and our Buttery Spread with Calcium and Vitamin D is a tasty way to get both nutrients.
