Supporting Healthy Cholesterol

It’s important to keep the ratio of “bad” LDL and “good” HDL at a healthy level and to maintain a low overall cholesterol level. For many individuals, simply reducing the amount of saturated and trans fats in their diets can help them maintain a healthy cholesterol level.

1. When at least 2/3 of fat intake comes from our food plan; limit fat to 30% of calories and saturated fats to 10% of calories. Limit cholesterol to 300mg/day. Avoid foods with partially hydrogenated oil. Exercise regularly.
2. Clinical studies have shown 1,300mg of plant sterol esters per day helps reduce cholesterol when consumed as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Smart Balance® HeartRight® Buttery Spreads contain 400mg of plant sterol esters per serving. Foods containing at least 400mg per serving of plant sterols eaten twice a day with meals (for a daily total intake of at least 800mg) may reduce the risk of heart disease.
